New Versions All Around

As many of you know, a the new 2.1 version of WordPress is almost finished. So I’ve actually been busy revising all my existing themes so they will be ready for the WordPress.

The new versions of veryplaintxt and plaintxtBlog are pretty much finished. Next will be Barthelme, Simplr, blog.txt, and then the Sandbox. That’s right: a new version of the Sandbox is coming in the next couple weeks.

Notably in the Sandbox there will be just a couple new body and post classes, better hAtom and hCard support, and a couple bug fixes here and there. As well as dropping the options menu (most likely). Look for it by the end of this month.

Overall I’ve been making a lot of great changes to these themes, and learning quite a bit along the way. I especially enthused about Microformats, and my new themes will reflect that.

Also, I’ve decided to experiment with hosting my themes (except the Sandbox for now) on Google Code. This is good because it’ll allow revisions, bugs, suggestions, documentation, etc., all to be tracked ala Subversion.

You can download the pre-release versions of plaintxtBlog and veryplaintxt on Google Code at:

Download the files, wiki any documents you like, or just record what the hell is going wrong with these themes. I think everyone’s input will just make these damn things better in the end.

Enjoy. And be assured there is more to come.

hAtom and hCard links are backwards/switched.

Btw- am amazing piece of work you’re doing here. As I’m not up on the WordPress theme scene but love your work, are there any other sites/designers/designs that you’d recommend?

Links have been transposed so they are correct. Thanks, DavidR.

When I see something I like, I usually post it to my del.icio.us with the tag “minimalism”. Check ‘em out:

    Hi Scott,

I’m glad to see you back with so many ideas.
A very nice feature would be, to change text and link clours via the admin menu.

I’ll do the german translation as soon as WP 2.1 is released.

If you try one of the RC versions of the plaintxtBlog or veryplaintxt noted above, plug in your URL to Technorati’s hCard extractor. Very slick.

very awesome. and inspiring. i’ll have to get on that hatom support.

I use your plaintext theme for my soccer website and appreciate your efforts in this area.

I’ve been very curious about microformats and their implementation. Your integration of the capabilities will lead to a nice new adventure that I look forward to.

Another technology to take into account? How about Mobile viewing. I can already do a credible job using the Opera browser on my Nokia 6682. Moving at least one sidebar to the right would improve things by taking users to my content more quickly and I’m certain a more knowledgeable person could point out additional steps.

Thanks again for your fine work.

The ability to add comments on Pages works like a dream, Scott. It’s going to transform my site from a blog with a couple of pages dangling off it, to an interactive CMS.

    Blooming Brilliant!

Thanks for the theme, I like blog.txt very much. As the days passes by, I added more stuff into my blog and the minimalistic theme is no more the way it looks like from original.

Whohoo! Sandbox 2.0! Can’t wait to get my hands on it. I loved the previous incarnations and totally agree, dump the options page. I never understood it. It was like another presentation menu one level deeper.

I actually just (almost) finished a sandbox website a few days ago. I love sandbox. love, love, love.

Well, I don’t know if I’ll bump the Sandbox to v2.0. Andy and I will need to look at the revisions. But a possible sneak-up to 1.0 could happen.

Ben, like your Sandbox skin, by the way. Especially how it handles sidebar matter. Christoph, I couldn’t find your Sandbox skin, but your main page is lovely.

Stay tuned. I’m hard at work. By the way, the Simplr pre-release is available at Google Code - Simplr. Enjoy.

Is the svn repository for Sandbox not available at the moment? I can’t reach it at ’svn://skeltoac.homelinux.net/sandbox/’. My svn client says “connection refused”.

I’ve got some requests for additional theme hooks, if you’re considering changes…

    Hi Dougal,

You’re right: the Sandbox SVN isn’t up right now. We’ll be pushing out an update in the very near future — next week or two. We’ll have a new SVN up and running by then.

    Hi,

Your blog.txt theme has been with me since Day1 of the birth of my blog. Wonder if you will be updating it for Wordpress 2.1?

Thanks and a Happy Chinese New Year to you!!

I showed sandbox today to someone and they were very interested (I’ve had it installed for a long time, yes I haven’t actually used it yet).

They asked if there was any skin (or plain.css file) that contains all the current selectors for Sandbox with or without format. I seemed to remember that one of the skins had this, but I can’t figure out which one it could be.

Have you considered adding such a plainstyle file with empty selectors? (not for IDs, obviously).
